Dear Family,
My brother, Daniel, suffered a stroke yesterday and is currently in intensive care at a Provo hospital. The stroke came from a blood clot in the brain which may have been a result of the heart operation he underwent last Saturday. Surgical attempts to remove the clot have not been successful and physicians are uncertain what to do next. He is awake, recognizes people and tries to communicate but cannot. I put his name in the temple this morning. Please exercise your faith and prayers in his behalf. love, Dad

Dear brothers and sister,
I hope Stephen has been able to contact all of you about Daniel. But in case he has not, I will fill you in and give the latest report as of noon Friday, April 13.
You all probably know that Daniel had surgery on his heart about a week ago. Following the surgery he seemed to be doing well.
At about 4 p.m. yesterday he suffered a stroke, was taken to UVRMC where it was determined a large blood clot had lodged in his left brain. They tried to surgically "suck" it out, as is often done, but were largely unsuccessful, due the the nature of the clot. There does not seem to be more they can do in that way. This morning they examined his heart to determine the origin of the clot and whether more of them might be forming. They found that more of them are forming, and blood cells are coagulating. So the doctors have a predicament: apply blood thinner and risk bleeding in the brain, or leave things as they are.
Now about Daniel himself: We had as nice a visit as you can expect! He was still recovering a little from the anesthetic given him earlier. But I was happy to see him smile repeatedly and respond to our greetings. He tries to talk, but is unable to make any meaningful sounds. He gestured with his left hand numerous times, and, just as we mentioned (to Susie) that we were leaving, he raised it in a farewell. Beautiful smiles, as has always been his nature. God bless him!
Susie is distraught, of course; particularly about not knowing what the next few hours or days will bring, not to mention the long-term situation. She was not optimistic, based on what the doctors have told her, about his improving.
Please continue to include him in your prayers.
My feeling is that if you can come, please do pay him a visit. It could be the last time we will have to do it.
